User guide for the Weeps desktop beta. The app is English-first; this page covers the beta feature set — if something looks different, check Help → Welcome inside the app.
Getting started
- Download the latest release from
weepsapp/weeps-releases
— pick
Weeps-Setup-<version>.exe(installer) or the-win-portablebuild (no install). Windows only for now. - Install. The build is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may warn on first run — choose More info → Run anyway.
- Sign in. During the closed beta the account itself is invite-bound: the invite email's link opens weeps.app/beta, verifies your address and lets you set a password — or continue with the Google account on the same email. That account signs the app in on first launch. See Subscriptions.
- Add your first storage — point Weeps at the folder where your music lives. It scans and indexes the files; nothing is copied or uploaded. See Storages & import.
- Play. The Explorer is your library home: browse by artist/album/genre, search, rate tracks, build playlists, open the Now Playing window for the immersive view.
Tip: Help → Welcome replays the guided tour, and the command palette (Ctrl/Cmd+K) reaches every feature by name.
Storages & import
A storage is any place your media lives — a local folder, a NAS share, an external drive or a cloud drive folder (Google Drive and others). You manage them on the Storages screen (File → Storages), where each storage shows its health and sync state.
Two ways to bring music in
- Add storage — the files stay where they are. Weeps indexes them in place and keeps watching the folder, so new files appear automatically. This is the recommended mode for existing collections.
- Copy files to library — Weeps copies the files into a storage it manages for you. Use it when consolidating scattered files or when the source is temporary (a USB stick, a download folder).
From a storage's context menu you can rescan, rename, temporarily disable it (keeps the tracks, stops the watcher) or remove it — removing detaches the storage from Weeps; your files on disk are never deleted.
Remote & cloud storages
Cloud providers are attached the same way after connecting the account — remote tracks stream on demand and can be hydrated locally for offline listening. A network path or NAS mount behaves like any other folder.
If the library ever looks wrong — missing tracks, stale entries — File → Library repair… offers three explicit fixes: check integrity, remove tracks from detached storages, or rebuild the index and rescan. None of them touch your media files.
Copy to SD / DAP
The Copy to SD card… button on the Explorer toolbar mirrors your library onto a portable target — an SD card, a USB drive or a digital audio player (DAP):
- Pick the destination root; Weeps mirrors the library tree (including attached storage sources) into it.
- Playlists are materialized as
.m3u8files during the export, so players that read playlist files just work. - A filename audit runs alongside the copy — names that would be invalid or collide on the target filesystem are reported before/after the copy, not silently mangled.
- The copy is incremental-friendly: unchanged files are skipped, and a live log shows progress and any failures per file.
- Optional: Include Audio Lab Stems / Cutter Segments — a checkbox inside the same panel, off by default (most DAPs don't need them).
Editor & Audio Lab
The built-in Editor (View → Editor, a track's ⋯ menu, or its context menu → Call Editor) is a simple multi-lane surface for working on tracks — not a full DAW:
- Stems — Audio Lab separates vocals, drums, bass and other into lanes you can mute, solo and level in the floating mixer.
- Cut & retime — drag a range on the waveform to trim, loop A/B to audition a section, time-stretch, or Normalize ▸ LUFS to level loudness per lane or the master.
- Mic lanes — add a live input channel to overdub narration or vocals onto the mix.
- Synced lyrics — the toolbar's Lyrics button opens a floating karaoke-style view that follows the playhead (needs LRC — add synced lyrics in Now Playing → Edit Lyrics).
- Practice mode — the toolbar's Practice button groups a pitch-kept session tempo, a speed trainer that steps up every few loop repeats, a metronome with count-in, and named section markers (M drops one at the playhead). Recorded takes land as selectable lanes you can solo to compare.
- Sessions & undo — edits save as resumable
sessions; the session browser reopens or deletes them. Every change
rides the undo history (Edit → Undo, Ctrl+Z) and the
History panel jumps to any checkpoint. Render writes the finished
mix into your library's
Edits/folder.
Step-by-step: the karaoke tutorial walks the whole flow — import, synced lyrics, a vocal-free backing stem, a mic lane and key shift.
Podcasts
Subscribe from the Explorer sidebar (Podcasts → +). Episodes stream or download on demand — and each show's Download Rules (on its page) can auto-download the latest N episodes and delete played ones after a set number of days, so shows stay fresh without manual cleanup.
Subscriptions & invites
- Local features are free — library, playback, editor, SD copy. No subscription, no expiry.
- Cloud sync needs a subscription — during the closed beta, access is granted by an email-bound invite (see Getting started). Separate redemption codes also exist: redeem one in Preferences → Subscription → Redeem code on an existing account.
- Devices — each device you sign in on is registered to your subscription for sync management (Preferences → Subscription lists them and can disconnect one). No device limit is enforced during the beta.
- Offline — sync leases renew while you're online; if a lease expires, cloud features pause but local playback always keeps working.
- Paid plans — the catalog is on the beta page. Nothing is billed during the beta; paid plans are announced before any charge.
FAQ
Does Weeps upload my audio?
No. Cloud sync carries metadata and state only — ratings, plays, tags, playlists, storage registry. Audio files and cover art never leave your devices; see the privacy policy.
Do I need an account to use the app?
The app asks you to sign in on first launch — the account is free, but creating one needs an invite during the closed beta. Once you're in, the local library works fully offline; a subscription only gates cloud features (sync, multi-device).
How do I get an invite?
The beta is invite-only. Write to contact@weeps.app or use the request-access link on the in-app invite screen.
Which platforms are supported?
Windows (installer and portable) during the beta. macOS and Linux builds are planned; mobile is on hold.
What happens to my files if I uninstall or delete my account?
Your files and library stay untouched — they're on your storages, not ours. Account deletion removes only your cloud data (sign-in, subscription, sync state).
Where do I report bugs or suggest features?
In the app, Help → Report Issue emails us directly. On the web, write to contact@weeps.app.
